چکیده

We examine the gas kinematics of the LMC revealed by the high spatial and velocity resolution H I data cube of the combined ATCA and Parkes telescope surveys. We adopt an approach designed to facilitate comparisons with quasar absorption line observations, in particular restricting our analysis to pointings with H I column density satisfying the damped Lyα (DLA) criterion. We measure velocity widths for ≈ 5000 random pointings to the LMC and find a median value of ≈ 40 km s which modestly exceeds the value predicted by differential rotation. This median is significantly lower than the median value observed for the metal-line profiles of high z DLA. Therefore, assuming the metal-line profiles track H I kinematics, the velocity fields of high z DLA are inconsistent with the kinematics of low-mass galaxies like the LMC. We also investigate the kinematic characteristics of the giant H I shells which permeate the LMC. These shells impart an additional 10 to 20 km/s to the velocity widths in ≈ 20% of random pointings to the LMC. These non-gravitational motions are insufficient to explain the DLA kinematics even if the shells had significanlty larger covering fraction in the early universe. To account for the DLA with processes related to SN feedback requires winds with a qualitatively different nature than those observed in the LMC. Properties and Origin of the High-velocity Gas toward the Large Magellanic Cloud

In the spectra of 139 early-type Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) stars observed with FUSE and with deep radio Parkes H I 21-cm observations along those stars, we search for and analyze the absorption and emission from high-velocity gas at +90 ≤ vLSR ≤ +175 km s . The H I column density of the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) along these sightlines ranges from < 10 to 10 cm. The incidence of the HVC met...

What are MACHOs? Interpreting LMC microlensing

I discuss two hypotheses that might explain LMC microlensing: the Halo stellar remnant lensing hypothesis and the unvirialized LMC lensing hypothesis. I show that white dwarfs cannot contribute substantially to the cosmic baryon budget; they are strongly constrained by chemical evolution and background light measurements. Although there have been some claims of direct optical detections of whit...

I review our understanding of the structure and kinematics of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), with a particular focus on recent results. This is an important topic, given the status of the LMC as a benchmark for studies of microlensing, tidal interactions, stellar populations, and the extragalactic distance scale. I address the observed morphology and kinematics of the LMC; the angles under w...

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

On the Nature of Velocity Fields in High Z Galaxies

We analyze the gas kinematics of damped Lyα systems (DLAs) hosting high z gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and those toward quasars (QSO-DLAs) focusing on three statistics: (1) ∆v90, the velocity interval encompassing 90% of the total optical depth, (2,3)W1526 andWCIV, the rest equivalent widths of the Si II 1526 and C IV 1548 transitions. The ∆v90 distributions of the GRB-DLAs and QSO-DLAs are similar,...
